If you don't give up, you can do it

Posted on 30 September 2007

This weekend I have done something that not many has done before. I participated in the first dog tracking in Belgium with Katinka and Shunka! This means that I did a walk of 75km (that’s about 47miles) in 3 days! And I can tell you it wasn’t easy and that had many reasons.
The most important reason is Shunka. She was in heat and then she is even more interesting for me than on other days. During these last few days I was very alert and didn’t want any other male dogs around her. So this meant that I had to protect her and keep a close watch on her and if necesary I had to stand tall and show to the other dogs that Shunka is mine and mine alone. But I can tell you that it has taking it’s toll. I’m very tired now and can’t wait to go to sleep.
The other reason that made us walk even more that the 75km is loss of direction. We were giving a map and a compass and we had to find our way to several check points. When entering the event, you had to choose what you wanted to do. And Katinka had choosen for the group walk of 75 km. But she forgot one important thing that she had to check before starting: is there someone in the group that can read a map!?!?!? And the answer is: NO!
On the first day there was a dropping in the evening and my group got lost very quickly and it resulted in the people of the organisation searching for us ^_^
But I have to say that I did a couple of things for the first time during this walk. Ofcourse, the event itself, walking 75km was something I’ve never done before. But there were also a couple of other things, some good and some bad.
This weekend was the first time that I had to sleep in a tent. I’ve always slept indoors and this was the first time that I had to sleep more outside. The second night it was a lot colder so Katinka decided to sleep in the car together with me and Shunka and I must say: it’s not comfortable.
And that was the good things, the bad news is that I hurt myself. On the last day during the walk some dog was coming closer to Shunka and I decided to distract that dog by playing with him. But during my excitement, I bit on my own tongue. It started bleeding very heavily and it took some time to stop. Luckely there was a vet with us and she took a look. I had a cut that was almost 2cm deep on the side just next to my left fang. It didn’t hurt that very long and it didn’t take long before I was acting like always. Jumping around and walking besides Shunka.
Sadly enough there aren’t any pictures because Katinka was to busy with checking if no dogs were ready to go close to Shunka.
But that’s all that I wanted to tell. I’m off to bed because I’m very tired now and want to go to sleep.

The results are in and…

I’m not telling. You’ll have to wait until I get to that part ^_^
The dog show is about a 15 minute walk from where I live, so Jessica and I went at foot. Jessica had packed everything in her backpack and in the walk to the show I was able to enjoy the fresh wet grass in the morning which I would have to miss for the rest of the day.
When we arrived at the location it was a bit unclear where we had to go, but a cooperator of the show told us where to go. But first we had to go to the health check post before entering the show. Since we didn’t had to go far we were one of the first to arrive. Many of the shops at the show were still very busy getting everything ready. But first we had to get our little information booklet to know where we had to be for showing.
When we found the ring I saw I ws the first keeshond to arrive. So now we knew where the ring was, but left immediatly after that to buy a slim leash for the show. It didn’t take long to find one and when we returned to the ring, there were more pomeranians and keeshonden at the ring. Jessica started to unpack her backpack and laid out my blanket for both of us to sit on. After a while some of the people we knew were starting to arrive. And then the long wait started.
Meanwhile, Karlo, the owner of the kennel that I come from, saw that there was an error. According to the information book I was a pomeranian. Nice to know that I suddenly are a different breed. So Karlo, Jessica and I, together with some other people, went to the secretary to sort out the mistake.
After all that was sorted out, we all went back to the ring to start waiting again. And finally at noon it was our turn. I had to stand in line with 2 other dogs and the game was on. I had to try to stand still, facing the right direction and not go sitting down. When the judge was ready we all had to walk a circle in the ring. Then the 2 other dogs went seperatly to the judge to be touched all over and walk a straight line. And then it was my turn. I was a bit uneasy because I never saw that person before, but both her and Jessica tried to relax me. After that we had to run another circle and the results were in…
..
….
Trying to raise the tension ^_^
…….
………
And sadly enough I was last. I guess the judge didn’t like my style. I’m a bit different then the others and she doesn’t know when she has a looker before her.
Just kidding, the winner of my group was a very beautiful keeshond and it was the right decision. After that, Jessica and I went together with Katinka and Tom to look around the show and didn’t see who were the other winners in the other categories for keeshond and pomeranians.
After that Jessica went to buy some stuff for the DSCB. By that time it was already past 3 in the afternoon and everyone was getting ready for the honour circle. So we went up to there and noticed that there was a professional photographer stall at the ring. So Jessica decided to let my picture taking. I had to lay down at a red blancket and pose. You can see the results of the pictures here and you can order some of them if you like ^_^
After the posing, we stayed to look at who all won in their groups. Sometimes we could just predict the winners.
After the show there was still something that Jessica had planned: a walk with some other people of a forum and Katinka with Sammy and Shunka. But first we had to wait for Katinka.
It wasn’t a long walk, but it was a relaxing walk and I was able to release all my energy from the day.
And now I’m finally home and very tired. So I’m off to bed. Good night and sleep tight ^_^

Dog show

Posted on 22 September 2007

Today is the day that I let myself be checked out by experts. And all I can say is that if they have better know that I’m the best their is ^_^
I’m actually not sure how this all works, but I think I will be fine. I just hope that I can play with lots of other dogs. I think that because it is a DOG show and other dogs will be present.
So I guess I have to start getting ready for it. I have to make sure that Jessica brings nice treats for my during the day ^_^

Beauty parlor

Posted on 21 September 2007

Today I went to a beauty parlor for the first time in my life. I had no idea what would happen, but I can tell you I’m happy it’s over.
It all started when Jessica came back from her work. She ran upstairs to change her clothes and eat something. And not much later we were in the car and off to somewhere I didn’t know. I was quite excited, because I wanted to know what we would do.
We drove for about an hour to Knokke-Heist (a beach city in Belgium). And when we arrived at the address, all we saw was a famous Belgian animals’ store. So by good luck we went in, and by surprise, it was a branch with a dog beauty parlor. We went inside the parlor and I got to meet the person who was working there. She seemed very nice in the beginning, but in fact she’s very cruel. I can’t win against her.
She started with putting on a different collar and placing me on a table. She brushed me for a bit, but soon she lifted me and off I went in a tub. I didn’t really like to surface of the tub, so I first tried to escape a couple of times, but everytime she caught me and put me back in place. Then she started running the water and made me wet. I didn’t want that and started struggling again. But no such luck. She still kept me in place T_T
After that she washed my with 2 kinds of shampoo before rinsing my hair. But when that was done, she did something I alsways like: drying me of with a big soft towel. When Jessica does that we play during that time ^_^
After that I was placed on the table again. She started with putting some mouse in my hair to get more volume. And then she came closer with a big blower. Before she aimed it at me, she put the blower on so that I could get used to the noise. When she started aiming the blower at my she started putting more volume in my hair. At some moments I didn’t like it a lot, and I made it noticable. I almost fell of the table because I kept moving to the other side so that the wind of the blower wouldn’t touch me. But again I failed T_T
After that she started on my paws. She cut the hair on my feet in perfect cat paws and also brushed the hair on my legs up to get more volume. This is necessarry, because I have thin legs and apparently a spitz has to have broader legs.
When she was almost finished she brushed a little bit more volume in my hair and then she was done. It took her an hour and a half to wash and brush me and Jessica said I looked a lot thicker than before and that she had the urge to run her hands through my hair to put it all back how it is usually.
When Jessica paid and we went back to the car, I just had to ask her one thing: “Was all this torture really needed?” ^_^

Dog show training

Posted on 13 September 2007

After Jessica got back from work, she was very busy with everything. But I didn’t know that we would be going away… to a training for showing.
Jessica put on a collar I’ve never worn before and we were both trying to get used to it. It makes a chain collar that shouldn’t harm my hair in any way. After getting used to it a bit, Jessica prepared some treats for me and then we went for a little walk. Then we immediatly got in the car and went direction Oostkamp (a town in Belgium, near Brugge).
After searching for a while we found the place were other people with their dogs were gathering. I was all like ‘Cool, new dogs to play with!’. But it wasn’t like that at all.
When we went inside I had to wait a while and started looking around. I saw an interesting shetland sheepdog and tried to pursuid her to play with me. But neither Jessica or the owner of the sheltie let us T_T
It was first the turn for the little dogs to get their training. So Jessica decided to sit with people to ask some more things about shows. But because it was getting later and later, Jessica asked if it was OK to train with the large puppies since this was our first time doing this training and we had to have some more time than with the adult large breeds.
We were shown the basics of how to show a dog and I didn’t like it one bit. My paws had to stand a certain way, I had to look at one direction, while walking I wasn’t allowed to jump or hop-skip,… I just can say that I had to act some way I didn’t like. It had all this different kinds of rules.
